There's a song by Jane's Addiction called True Nature. The last line of the chorus reads:
"How you treat the weak is your true nature calling."
I find that to be an interesting lyric. It basically means that who a person really is comes out when they deal with people who aren't as powerful as them or don't have influence over them. I believe this is directed toward hypocrites and suck-ups. A person may seem nice and caring to their peers and superiors, but when they're around those who are below them, they may act like a jerk. But why is this?
It's kinda simple, really. Such a person isn't really nice or caring; they're just trying to make themselves look good. So they act pleasant to the people they want to impress. They'll see this person's polite demeanor and take it to mean that this is a good, caring person. But then when that person is just out on the street, they wouldn't be pleasant at all. Their actual character, their true nature, would come out.
An interesting aspect would be to include animals in the classification of weak. Most animals people come into contact with are pets who can't do much to them. Since people have power over them, they can universally be considered weak. So, one way of thinking would be to say that how a person treats pets when no one else is watching is an indicator of their actual character.
From the song's music video and image, one can easily tell that riots are a part of this song. People usually riot about political issues. So how does True Nature relate to politics? It's likely describing corrupt politicians. One such person might be all smiles for the voters when all they want is their votes. They might pass legislation to help the poor in order to look good for the general public, then completely ignore them when no one is looking.
Another lyric of the song asks, "Do you really care?" This goes along with my previous example; the politician doesn't really care about the poor; he just cares about his reputation.
Yet another example: the lyric: "Come to rescue you just to lean on you with interests soaring." A man might send his country to war to free a captive peoples then turn around and simply use them to harvest resources. His poor treatment of these poor people revealed his true nature. I'm not sure what the 'interests soaring' part is about. Perhaps it's referencing his ulterior motives.
